Why Ten Minutes Of Meditation A Day Might Be Your Best Longevity Investment
It costs nothing, takes ten minutes and the science suggests it could be slowing down ageing at a cellular level. Lauren Parmar, founder of MOOD, on the biology behind meditation's most surprising benefits.
There is so much noise around achieving the perfect glow-up: the latest makeup trend, the new lip stain, the fat loss hack. And while those things may have their place, what I have learnt is this: the most powerful glow-ups have nothing to do with skincare, gym routines or aesthetics. What everyone sees on the outside is simply the by-product of something shifting on the inside. And meditation is the most powerful tool I have found for creating that shift.
Earlier this month, I wrote about my own experience with meditation (which you can read here) and to quickly sum it up: through regular practice, things started to change in a way that was so profound it surprised me. More clarity, more optimism, more inspiration, more belief and, strangely, a glow-up: clearer skin, longer hair and an all-round healthier appearance. And when it comes to meditation, there is actual science behind why.
The biology of the glow
Let's start with stress. When we exist in a chronic state of low-level anxiety or stress (which, let's face it, for many of us in the modern world has become the default setting), our bodies produce elevated levels of cortisol. And cortisol, among other things, breaks down collagen, the protein responsible for skin's elasticity and firmness, triggers inflammation and disrupts sleep. The result can be dull skin, breakouts, puffiness and accelerated ageing. Essentially, stress is quietly ageing us from the inside out.
But a landmark 2023 review published in PMC, analysing 58 clinical trials across more than 3,500 adults, found that mindfulness and relaxation practices were among the most effective interventions for reducing cortisol. Less cortisol means less inflammation, better sleep and, often, clearer skin.
But the evidence goes deeper than that, suggesting meditation can actually change us at the cellular level. Telomeres are the protective caps at the end of our DNA strands. Every time a cell divides, those caps get a little shorter, and when they become too short to protect the DNA inside, cells stop functioning properly. They age, deteriorate and eventually die. Telomere shortening is now understood to be one of the primary drivers of biological ageing, linked to everything from wrinkles and declining skin cell turnover to reduced immunity and increased disease risk. The longer your telomeres, the more youthful your cells, and by extension, the more youthful you
In a study co-authored by Elizabeth Blackburn, who shared the 2009 Nobel Prize for her discovery of telomeres, meditators showing the greatest psychological improvements also had the highest levels of telomerase activity, the enzyme that repairs and rebuilds telomere caps. A separate pilot study found that participants in a three-month meditation retreat showed a 30% increase in telomerase activity. Meaning a consistent meditation practice may not just be changing how you feel. It could be slowing down how fast you age, right down to your DNA.
How to start your own inner glow-up
The good news is that you do not need to meditate for an hour a day to experience these benefits. Research suggests that even short, consistent practice, such as ten minutes a day is enough to begin rewiring neural pathways and shifting your baseline state, and that measurable changes in the brain can be produced in as little as eight weeks.
The key word is consistency. Like the gym, it is not the single session that transforms you. It is the accumulated effect of showing up again and again, even when it feels like nothing is happening. The inner transformation happens first, often long before any changes manifest externally.
If you are not sure where to start, guided meditation is a brilliant entry point, whether through an app, a class or an online programme. At MOOD, we work with the body, breath and mind together, using guided meditation and visualisation practices to support our members in rewiring the inner architecture of their minds, so they can consciously create the future they are calling in.
You are worthy, because you decide that you are
In a world that constantly tries to convince us we are not enough, so many people are desperately trying to prove their self-worth through achievements and aesthetics. The irony is that what we are all secretly craving is to feel accepted, exactly as we are.
I meet so many women who struggle with body image and spent so many years of my own life hating on my body, feeling frustrated that I couldn’t live up to the unrealistic beauty standards we see online and in the media. I wasted a lot of time trying to force myself to change from the outside in. But I can honestly say I’m finally in a place where I feel good and confident in my own skin, without feeling the incessant need to change and improve everything.
Carl Rogers famously said: "The curious paradox is, when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change." What I have come to understand is that you do not need to wait for your outside appearance to change, or for the outside world to validate you. The world, the patriarchy and capitalism may try to convince you that you’re not enough, but don’t let anyone else decide for you. You are already worthy, valuable, sexy, capable, beautiful, exactly as you are.
The most impressive glow-ups will never come from a product. They come from a practice. From having the courage and discipline to put yourself into a container for transformation, and to trust that with consistency and intention, a new way of thinking, feeling and living is entirely possible.
And contrary to what I used to believe, this level of transformation was never about becoming someone you are not. What meditation brings us is something far more powerful than that. It provides a route back to ourselves, so that we can softly and compassionately return to the most confident, beautiful versions of who we already are.
