Why You Might Need That Monthly Facial More Than You Think

Beyond glowing skin, facials offer something far deeper: a full-body exhale for the nervous system. Here, Chelseé Lewis explores why this ritual is as vital for the mind as it is for the skin.

Today, we live in a world where we need to be both mentally and physically fit — fending off challenges from every direction has become a daily occurrence. So, we seek comfort in wellness experiences, and having regular facials goes far deeper than skin level. It’s an experience that works on the senses, helping to keep our mental health in check as we take the time to look after both our mind and body.

When you walk into the treatment room, the first sense to engage is smell. That moment of breathing in a beautiful aroma instantly makes you feel calm. Next, the music begins to soothe your ears, complementing the scent, while the warm temperature of the room helps your body relax. Then, as you settle onto a heated bed beneath a soft duvet, you feel as though you’re taking cover, cocooned and ready to receive your facial treatment.

You’ll often be asked to focus on your breathing to help regulate the nervous system ( the network of nerves that sends signals throughout the body) enhancing relaxation and the overall sense of well-being. We are all on autopilot most of the time, so it’s important to pause and reconnect with our breath, bringing it back to deep, slow inhales. Becoming conscious of your breath activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the body’s ‘rest and digest’ mode) which slows the heart rate and lowers blood pressure, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.

All of these calming rituals happen before a facialist even lays a hand on your skin, but massage, of course, is one of the most fundamental parts of the treatment. We work to activate the nervous system by stimulating the skin and muscle tissue, bringing a sense of calm through increased microcirculation. By working towards the lymph nodes, we help deliver oxygen and nutrients to the skin while releasing stagnation. This process lowers stress hormones such as cortisol, keeping the skin bouncy and resilient. High levels of cortisol can break down collagen (the skin’s main structural framework) leading to inflammation and premature ageing.

The face can hold onto significant stress from daily life, so working on its 43 muscles helps to sculpt and de-puff, releasing tension, reducing water retention, and leaving the complexion more contoured with lifted, defined cheeks. These massage techniques, paired with tailored skincare, leave the skin looking rejuvenated, plumper, brighter, and more at ease — the visible result of inner calm.

By making a facial a monthly must-have, the benefits, both physical and mental, will speak for themselves — whether your ritual takes place in your bathroom mirror with half an hour to truly focus on nourishing your skin, or in the hands of a skilled facialist who instinctively understands what your body, skin, and mind need most in that moment.
