Why Fibre Is The Unsung Hero Of Your Diet

Fibre might not be the sexiest nutrient, but it could be the secret to staying balanced, energised and satisfied, says nutritionist, author, and founder of GP Nutrition Gabriela Peacock.

When we talk about health and nutrition, fibre isn’t exactly the most glamorous topic, but it’s one of the most powerful tools we have for maintaining balance, feeling good and supporting long-term wellbeing. I see it all the time with my clients: they’ll focus on protein, cut back on sugar, or try the latest detox, but fibre is often forgotten.

So what exactly is fibre, and why does it matter so much? Fibre is a type of carbohydrate that the body can’t digest. Instead of being broken down into sugar, it passes through the digestive system, keeping things moving and feeding the beneficial bacteria in the gut. It supports digestion, appetite control and blood sugar regulation, all key for maintaining a healthy weight and a happy gut.

The truth is that most of us simply don’t get enough. Even with the best intentions, busy schedules, travel and eating on-the-go mean fibre often gets forgotten about.

I always talk about creating a realistic, sustainable approach, one that allows you to enjoy yourself while still supporting your body. Once you know how, it is easy to include high-fibre ingredients in your favourite meals. Think roasted vegetables like Brussels sprouts, parsnips, carrots, and red cabbage, all rich in fibre and antioxidants. Or try swapping white rice for quinoa or lentils. Choose wholegrain bread for your breakfast and add a generous handful of greens to your lunch or dinner plate.

One simple and effective way to stay on track when you don't have the ability to make your own meals is by adding a daily fibre supplement. I recommend glucomannan, a soluble fibre. It’s one of the key ingredients in my MetaboliseMe supplement at GP Nutrition, designed to support digestion, appetite and gut health.

Beyond digestion, fibre also plays a vital role in keeping energy levels stable, supporting immunity and maintaining focus, all of which often take a hit during busy periods filled with social events and late nights. It’s about protecting your wellbeing from the inside out, so you can enjoy your life rather than just recover from it.

By nourishing your body with fibre, good-quality protein and the right supplements (including a comprehensive multivitamin to fill nutritional gaps), you set yourself up for a strong, balanced start. You’ll notice improvements not just in digestion and energy, but also in your skin, sleep and overall vitality.

As I always say to my clients, life is about balance. You don’t need to restrict yourself, just be conscious of what you are fueling your body with. Enjoy a glass of wine with friends or family, or a dessert when out at a restaurant, but balance it out with nourishment that supports your body. A little more fibre each day might just be the easiest, most effective gift you can give yourself.
