The New Era of Luxury: The Quiet Power Of Natural Fancy Colour Diamonds

As lab-grown stones reshape the jewellery landscape, true luxury is being redefined. Here, jewellery designer and GIA graduate Reema Chopra explains why natural fancy colour diamonds, with their rarity, depth and enduring value, remain unmatched.

As lab-grown diamonds flood the market, true luxury has taken on new meaning. It is no longer a case of ‘the bigger, the better’, but rather authenticity, rarity and story that now take centre stage. I’ve always been drawn to stones that feel alive — gems that hold history in their depths — and no stone tells that story more powerfully than a natural fancy colour diamond.

Once overlooked, these diamonds have finally found their place in the world of fine jewellery. Their tones, ranging from soft champagne to deep cognac and everything in between, often reveal flashes of yellow, orange, green or gold. They are warm, versatile, and quietly confident — the kind of stone that commands attention without ever needing to shout.

Fancy colour diamonds owe their beauty to the tiniest distortions in their crystal structure, formed deep underground over billions of years. Those subtle irregularities bend light in ways we could never predict, creating a layered, shifting glow. I adore the stones that hold just a touch of brown, leaning towards green, orange or yellow — they feel earthy and alive, like a sunset. That complexity is what sets them apart from lab-grown stones, where colour often appears flat, lacking that quiet magic, depth, and subtle play of light that comes only from nature.

As a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), I’ve spent my career studying and celebrating these natural wonders. Long before fancy colored diamonds became trendy, I built Khepri Jewels around them. For me, they represent character and complexity that simply cannot be replicated in a lab. Each one feels as if it holds the sun inside it — capturing light differently: softer, warmer, more human. That’s what I love about them.

Khepri was born from a moment of transformation: resetting a dear friend’s engagement ring after a difficult chapter in her life. Giving that diamond new life reminded me that true luxury is never disposable — it’s enduring. Natural diamonds can be restyled, resold, traded or passed down; they are an investment, not a placeholder.

My reputation has been built on honesty, relationships, and an unshakeable love for my craft. My clients choose to work with me because I guide them with knowledge, helping them make strategic investments. I often understand a new client within 30 seconds of meeting them, instinctively knowing which pieces they will love and actually wear — jewellery that can actually be worn, not locked away in a safe for decades to come. My inspiration comes not only from the stones themselves, but from the person who will wear them.

I treat my clients like family, and I’ll always be honest with them. If you are buying something meaningful, you deserve something real. To me, setting a lab-grown diamond in gold devalues the gold itself — it holds a place in costume jewellery, not fine jewellery.

Beyond personal meaning, natural diamonds have real-world impact. The diamond industry protects vast ecosystems and provides vital employment, education and healthcare in producing regions — reinvesting billions back into local communities. Our team continues to partner with nonprofit organisations to support, educate, and boost the health of young girls and women in these diamond-producing communities.

Khepri — named after the Egyptian scarab symbolising rebirth — is rooted in transformation. I encourage clients to evolve their jewellery over time: resetting heirlooms, layering charms, and creating something new from pieces that already carry deep meaning.

My GIA training gives me the technical eye to evaluate every nuance, but my heart leads the way. A perfect white diamond is beautiful, of course — but a fancy colour diamond with variations of colour and undertones of brown and gold, alive with shifting depth, is unpredictable in the best way.

In a world full of replicas, Khepri stands for integrity. We don’t chase trends or mimic others. Our pieces transcend time and outlast fads. We honour nature’s artistry and the slow magic of time itself. And in the quiet shimmer of a natural fancy colour diamond, you’ll find everything Khepri represents: authenticity, transformation and truth.
