Inside The Indian Health Retreat Helping To Heal The Gut
King Charles, Deepak Chopra, Emma Thompson and Sting are all noted fans of SOUKYA, often described as the world’s first integrative health destination. Here, Dr Isaac Mathai explains what truly goes on behind its gastrointestinal programme.
For thousands of years, Ayurveda has taught that the gut is the seat of health. Today, modern scientific research echoes this wisdom, recognising that the gastrointestinal (GI) system influences not only digestion, but also immunity, metabolism, mental health and systemic inflammation. At SOUKYA, we see every day how deeply interconnected gastrointestinal disorders are with lifestyle, emotions, stress, diet and even unresolved trauma. Healing the gut, therefore, requires far more than symptom control; it requires treating the whole person.
Gastrointestinal diseases include a wide range of conditions affecting the oesophagus, stomach and intestinal tract, such as gastritis, duodenitis, acid peptic disease, constipation, colitis, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Symptoms can vary widely, from abdominal pain, bloating and changes in bowel habits to nausea, fatigue, weight loss and blood in the stool. While these manifestations may appear localised, GI disease is rarely a problem of the gut alone. It is commonly a systemic issue that simply expresses itself in the digestive tract.
Because of this, at SOUKYA, every guest entering the GI Programme undergoes a detailed 60–90 minute integrative medical assessment on their first day of admission. Specialists in Ayurveda, Naturopathy and Homeopathy evaluate the individual from multiple medical perspectives, supported by diagnostic tests where necessary. This allows us to identify root causes, whether inflammatory, metabolic, emotional, lifestyle-related or psychosomatic, and tailor a highly personalised treatment plan.
From here, our guests embark on a therapeutic programme that treats the system, not just the symptoms. Daily therapies aim to reduce inflammatory activity, restore balance and calm the nervous system.
Treatments include classical Ayurvedic procedures such as Shirodhara, Ksheeradhara, Thalam, Takradhara, Abhyanga, Vasthi, Virechana and Pizhichil. These are complemented by naturopathic therapies including acupuncture, mud packs, colon hydrotherapy, hydrotherapy baths, acupressure and reflexology. Yoga therapy, incorporating asanas, pranayama, meditation and relaxation, supports metabolic regulation and builds mind-body resilience.
Each treatment session ranges from 15 to 45 minutes, with three to fourteen sessions of each therapy prescribed, depending on the severity and chronicity of the condition.
And, of course, diet therapy forms a cornerstone of healing. Personalised therapeutic nutrition detoxifies, improves metabolism and restores optimal gut function. Through this integrative triad of Ayurveda, Naturopathy and Homeopathy, supported by yoga, diet and lifestyle medicine, we aim not just to manage disease, but to transform long-term health.
Typically, guests begin with an intensive two-to-three-week residential programme, followed by six to twelve months of herbal and homeopathic medication, alongside periodic follow-up treatments.
A real-life example of how we create change
One of our guests, a 25-year-old male with Crohn’s disease, came to SOUKYA with severe symptoms including abdominal pain, loose bowels, multiple joint pain, anxiety, depression and disturbed sleep. He had been on weekly biological injections, along with psychiatric medications.
Over a three-week integrative treatment plan at SOUKYA, including Ayurvedic therapies, acupuncture, colon hydrotherapy, yoga, a low-carb therapeutic diet and homeopathic constitutional remedies, his progress was significant. Joint pain reduced from 8/10 to 2/10, abdominal pain from 6/10 to 2/10, anxiety and stress improved from severe to mild, sleep normalised, and loose stools completely resolved. Continued lifestyle modification, medication and periodic treatments over two years helped him regain long-term stability and wellbeing.
What truly makes SOUKYA unique is its unwavering commitment to treating the person, not the disease. We view health through a holistic, integrative lens that considers the physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual dimensions of wellbeing. Our success lies in addressing underlying systemic imbalance rather than simply soothing the site of symptoms.
As I often say, gastrointestinal disorders respond best when Western diagnostics and medical insight are combined with ancient healing sciences. When these worlds are brought together with precision and compassion, true healing becomes not only possible, but expected.
